A Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation built on a simple idea: take health information to the people who need it most, in the places where they already are.
Vibrant Health Advocates - Novara is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation registered and operating in Angus, with our work centred on the industrial and petrochemical communities of Montrose and the surrounding area. We were established by people who had seen, close up, what happens when workers in physically demanding jobs go without reliable health information for years — the preventable diagnoses, the careers cut short, the conditions that could have been managed early but weren't. Our response was to build something that went to workers rather than waiting for workers to come to us.
Our approach is resolutely practical. We partner with employers, trade unions, port authorities and processing facilities to gain access to sites, and then we deliver structured health sessions that address the specific risks and realities of each workplace. A session for dock workers handling bulk cargo will look different from one for process operators in a petrochemical facility — the hazards differ, the physical demands differ, and so does the conversation. We tailor everything, and we return regularly so that health awareness becomes part of the culture of a workplace rather than a one-off event people forget by the following Monday.
Beyond direct sessions, we provide individual wellbeing advocacy — helping workers who have received a diagnosis, who are managing a long-term condition in a demanding job, or who are struggling to access the support they are entitled to. This side of our work is quieter but often the most consequential. Sitting with someone who has just been told they have early-stage hearing loss or a musculoskeletal condition, helping them understand what it means and what their options are, is work that matters deeply and that our team approaches with the seriousness it deserves.
Vibrant Health Advocates - Novara grew out of conversations that took place in and around Montrose Harbour in the mid-2010s, when a small group of occupational health professionals, trade union representatives and community health workers began comparing notes on what they were seeing. The pattern was consistent: workers in port and processing jobs were arriving at occupational health appointments — or at their GP — with conditions that had been developing quietly for years, conditions that earlier information and attention could have caught.
The barriers were not lack of care but lack of access: sessions happened during hours workers couldn't attend, in locations they didn't pass through, and in language that felt like it was written for someone else. The founding trustees decided the solution was straightforward in principle, if demanding in practice: take health information to where workers already were, make it relevant to their actual jobs, and keep coming back.
The charity was formally constituted as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation and began its first employer partnerships in Montrose's port and industrial estate. In the years since, the programme has grown substantially — more employers, more sites, a wider range of health topics, and a developed advocacy service — but the founding logic remains exactly what it was. Workers in demanding industrial jobs deserve to be healthy and informed throughout their working lives, and we are here to help make that possible.
Vibrant Health Advocates - Novara exists to protect and promote the health and wellbeing of workers in Montrose's industrial, port and petrochemical sectors by delivering evidence-based, plain-English health information directly into workplaces, by providing personal wellbeing advocacy to individuals navigating health challenges within demanding occupational environments, and by working with employers and sector partners to build lasting cultures of health awareness across the workforce. We believe that access to good health information should not depend on where you work or what your shift pattern looks like, and we are committed to being a consistent, trusted and genuinely independent presence for the workers and families of this industrial community.
Vibrant Health Advocates - Novara is governed by a board of trustees drawn from occupational health, community nursing, trade union representation and the local business community. The trustees bring direct knowledge of the industrial and healthcare environments in which the charity operates and oversee the organisation's strategy, finances and governance with close involvement in programme development. Day-to-day delivery is carried out by our small staff team and a network of trained health facilitators, many of whom have direct personal experience of working in the industries we serve.
